Did Diplo hypocritically call out DJ BL3ND?
Apr 18th
Yesterday, word got out regarding both a verbal and reportedly physical altercation involving Diplo and DJ BL3ND’s camp at IMS Engage. While hosting a social media panel with Kevin Systrom, the co-founder of Instagram, the Mad Decent head brought up the recent trend of buying followers, saying “You don’t really want fake Facebook fans; they don’t buy your records.” He went as far as providing an example: the ever polarizing DJ BL3ND.
I wouldn’t have been surprised if BL3ND bought a majority of his likes/follows, despite the fact that he seems to somehow sell out shows across the country. So, my curiosity got the better of me, and while I don’t know a way to investigate fake Facebook fans (which is what Diplo cited specifically), I do know of a pretty good site for singling out accounts with phony Twitter followers. I figured that if you were going to buy fans for one, why not the other, right?
My findings were amusing, to say the least. I should note that I can’t guarantee the legitimacy of StatusPeople’s methodology, and that while I have generally found the site to be accurate/consistent in the past, fake followers do not necessarily equal bought followers. Seven percent of my 541 followers, for example, are cited as fake according to that site.
That said, let’s check it out.
The death of Sazon Booya, the end of an era, and a genre hanging in the balance
Mar 29th
Led Zeppelin broke up. A Tribe Called Quest broke up. Hell, even The Beatles broke up. It happens. But as word virally began to spread this week about the abrupt and mysterious dismantling of Sazon Booya, one of the most prominent driving forces behind moombahton’s rapid prosperity, a definitive line was drawn in dance music’s most tight knit community. The question everyone seemed to be asking was: are you Team Vega, or are you Team SAV?
If Nadastrom is to moombahton what The Ramones were to punk, or if even further Dillon Francis can be compared to The Clash, then Sazon Booya was undoubtedly The Sex Pistols. They weren’t the originators, and they didn’t necessarily find the most commercial success. Rather, they embodied everything moombahton stands for. They were its culture, its personality, and its face. Sazon Booya simply was moombahton — a raucous, sexy, relentless party that went all-in every damn time. And now they’re gone.
Their existence was the capital letter that started the story of a genre that, early last year, seemed unstoppable. Today, their demise could be the punctuation mark on one that is on the brink of crisis.

I was watching some super low quality, filmed on a camera phone, Baauer set one time while lost in YouTube’s related videos the first time I heard “Scumbag”. The minimalistic, dark, and heavy trap chune resonated with me and so many others as the Biggie sample from “Suicidal Thoughts” speaks to every vice plagued fan of this music.
Normally, I try to be careful about overplaying songs that I like so I don’t ClearChannel myself. I couldn’t help myself with “Scumbag”. This track has bumped through my speakers so much that I’m positive my neighbor’s 5 year old children know it word for word (if you’re reading this, sorry Hwang!).
Justin Timberlake – Suit & Tie (Aeroplane Remix)
Mar 13th
Not too long ago I was doing my last futile sweep through my Twitter timeline before bed, hoping to come across something worthwhile mixed in with the usual melting pot of instapets, sensational headlines, and mundane complaints. The topic du nuit was apparently Justin Timberlake’s new song. Not just that he put out a new song, but that this particular song was the key to world peace and prosperity. Seriously, you couldn’t pay people to have more glowing reviews, it seemed.
Yellow Claw – Amsterdam Trap Music EP [FREE DL]
Mar 11th
Sometimes, my American comrades, we get straight up disrespected in the world of dance music. UK based fans in particular seem to enjoy belittling the recent surge of popularity and fandom towards dance music in the States in the same way passionate sports fans would with bandwagoners in a market experiencing anomalous success. Never mind the fact that house music originated in the United States — why let that get in the way of some good elitIst fun?
For all the critiques of the current boom of trap music that its opponents have, however, we should take a certain sense of pride that this homegrown sound is becoming a global movement, with producers on the other side of the ocean catching on. This is particularly evident in the Dutch trio Yellow Claw’s latest EP, Amsterdam Trap Music. Released last week on Mad Decent’s fantastic Jeffree’s imprint Yellow Claw decided to leave behind the exhausted gimmicky “real trap shit” add ons like “Damn Son” samples, police sirens, dogs barking, glass shattering, babies crying, nuclear bombs exploding, (okay I’m getting carried away) and instead created a unique and exceptional trap record that has a very distinct and refreshing foreign sound.
Buraka Som Sistema Boiler Room set [VIDEO]
Mar 5th
While I know it’s going to draw some scoffs from people reading this, but my introduction to the legendary Boiler Room was when I came across the widely shared Skream and Disclosure back to back set from late last year, which sparked my admiration for the beautiful genre of deep house. Since 2010, the Boiler Room has been live streaming and archiving DJ sets from venues in London, Berlin, NYC, and LA with high quality audio and video. In that time, they’ve compiled the most comprehensive catalog of DJ sets on the planet.
Last week, I had the pleasure of coming across this video featuring Branko, DJ Riot, and MC Kalaf of Buraka Som Sistema, the talented Portuguese group that many consider introduced the sound of kuduro to western ears. Together with Red Bull Music Academy, the Boiler Room captured what could very well have been a raucous basement party in Portugal’s capital city, Lisboa.
This incredible 50 minute set takes you through a journey of tropical bass, starting with 15 minutes of what sounds to me like moombahton, but Kalaf repeatedly refers to as “zouk bass” (note to self: check that shit out). A handheld confetti cannon then announces the arrival of some electrifying kuduro as the energy in the intimate venue finds another gear.

Introducing: Kuduro/Electric Carnival – aka Moombahton On Crack
Nov 13th
Today marks the three year anniversary of when Dave Nada first slowed down Afrojack’s remix to “Moombah” and became credited with creating what was ultimately 2011′s hottest sound. Or at least I think so. Honestly everyone’s just been saying “Happy Birthday Moombahton” today so I’m just going with it.
What a better way to recognize this day than writing about an entirely different genre?
Actually there are a lot of similarities. The style of dance music referred to as “kuduro” by some and “electric carnival” (or just simply “carnival”) can be dumbed down being called “fast moombahton”, but obviously it’s more than that. Its tempo generally hovers around 140, and contains elements of both moombah and the in-between genre dutch house. The percussion pattern is usually similar to moombahton’s dem bow beat, but simple and heavy four-on-the-floor kicks on every beat are common as well. Minimalistic and high pitched dirty dutch synths carry the lead for an overall jungle feel. It’s high energy in the same way your six year old cousin on three cups of coffee is high energy.
Carnival is much more commonly heard on the other side of the Atlantic, and you might recognize many respected UK dubstep producers such as Caspa, Skream, Benga, and High Rankin, among others, churning out these bass tunes. I have become a massive supporter of this kind of music, as the music’s emphasis on percussion is what I also love about moombahton and trap. The songs that follow in this post have been finding their way into the dubstep and trap portions of my sets as of late.
Chances are, you’ve heard a carnival tune without knowing it, only to think “What the hell WAS that?” afterwards. I know I get that reaction a lot from people after I drop some, but in the most positive way possible. Um, I think. Well, I hope.
Perhaps the most popular (or maybe I should say “well known”, if there’s even a difference) carnival track is “Computation” by who’s also the genre’s most popular producer, Dismantle. I know you’ve heard this if you’ve been to a single festival in the past year.
