After what has felt like weeks of rain here in Boston, the sun is out and seems like it’s here to stay. Which means one thing for me; more glistening disco tracks in my library. And that means the third installment (Vol. 1, Vol. 2) of Funk Me for you folks. I’ve decided to use Funk Me as way of providing you with tons of awesome free grooviness, but also highlighting specific artists who I feel are doing something special. This week those artists are Le Youth and Moon Boots.
Le Youth creates an infectious vibe of stuttering vocals and tropical disco, on “Dance With Me.”
“The Night” starts off with that signature French-filter sweep but evolves into a retro, roller-rink-worthy, Soul Train era tune.
Both artists of the week meet in a case of cosmic fate on “Off My Mind (Le Youth Remix)” a blistering track highlighted by Le Youth’s stelar keyboard skills and a pulsing 80s style backdrop courtesy of Moon Boots.
Moon Boots – Off My Mind (Le Youth Remix)
“Bills to Pay” combines deep and balearic house styles with Gospel vocals.

You remember Comic Strips, right? Since we featured him last November, the budding producer has been hard at work assaulting eardrums as he plays gigs on both coasts. What proved to be a huge year for him has culminated in what has to be the high point of his young career — a spot in the massive, six stage Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, British Columbia as he performs on the same decks as the likes of Zeds Dead, Dillon Francis, Pretty Lights, and many others.
This morning, as I settled at my desk with my Johnnie Walker spiked coffee and prepared to spit venom at anyone who dared to interact with me (psst…in case you don’t know what I’m talking about), I saw that our inbox had been treated to an email from the 20 year old whose production is wise beyond his years.

It’s time for the second installment of Funk Me (make sure to get last weeks tunes here) and I’ve got another batch of free downloads for you. A collection of eight tracks with a distinctly retro 80′s flavor and summer time vibe. Think of them as sun-kissed cassette tapes that were left in the glove box just a little bit too long one weekend.
Oh… and if I’m not absolutely loving life like this Motha’ Fuckin’ P-I-M-P above when I’m fat, old, and retired on south beach; it will be because I spent my time blogging about EDM and generally being an irresponsible leech on society, instead of furthering my career and building a 401K. Thanks for making this all possible, DUBCO fam!
Le Crayon kicks us off with an original that could not have a more fitting title. “Lush” is filled with buttery chords and grinding basslines, throw in a splash of Madeon-style funk and you’ve got my favorite track of the season so far:
The 20 year-old Parisian shines on remixes too; his combination of glittery synths and piercing mid-range electro make the track stand out among the pack:

Last Thursday I had the pleasure of sitting at a table with an up and coming producer who’s making waves across the internet and bursting onto the scene. Gabe Baer has been churning out bootlegs and originals on Soundcloud under the name CRNKN for the last couple of months.
What started out as fun between him and his friends has grown into a legitimate profession. Having received support from Lazerdisk Party Sex, Aylen, and the Cataracts, among others, CRNKN is set to shed his humble New Hampshire digs for a big career headlining concert halls for years to come.
Gabe chatted with me before his show with Robotic Pirate Monkey at the Middle East in Cambridge where we engaged in gentlemanly discourse and fancy world play. More >
Mix Mondays: Ordan

Ordan (right) and Electrode Entertainment co-founder Jakels
Fortunately for me, the subject of today’s Mix Mondays post happens to be a friend of mine, with whom I’ve been lucky enough to share many crazy nights with raging in laser ridden college basements with enough colors of the spectrum to blind small children, and enough subwoofer power they might as well have been called bassment jams. Hey DUBCO fam, my name’s Imarami and I’m here to provide you with something a little different every now and then. I introduced myself last week with the Break Science interview, but this is the first chance I’ve had to share some new music with you. Funk Me will be a weekly column featuring the best in nu-disco, funk, electro-house, and anything else that has some soul. For this week, I’ve put together a list of nine of my favorite tracks from the last year, a group of tracks that make you wish for summer road-trips just as much as sweaty beachside-dances. Now don’t get me wrong, I love the wompage of hard-hitting dubstep as much as the next bro, but there’s something undeniably sexy and hip-shakingly groovy about the reviving disco movement. So strap in, you’re in for a wild ride.

DUBCO EXCLUSIVE: Break Science talks melodic bass, Pretty Lights Music, and being a live electronic act
Apr 4th
This past weekend I got the chance to talk with Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee of Break Science on the phone while they had some downtime from their relentless touring schedule. A touring schedule that brings them to none other than the storied Paradise Rock Club in Boston this Thursday (4/5) as part of the Together festival [TIX]. While the Together festival features a wide range of artists and DJs, Break Science stand out as musicians who could hold their own in any symphony or speakeasy, yet are equally adept at d-d-d-d-dropping the bass. If you haven’t had a chance to hear their music yet, and you won’t be able to catch any of their shows this tour. Be sure to download both of their EPs for free from the Pretty Lights Music label.
First up, I spent some time talking with drummer Adam Deitch:
DUBCO EXCLUSIVE: Skerrit Bwoy talks DJs, faith, and the Major Lazer cartoon
Apr 1st
He’d swapped the Henny for a bottle of OJ.
When the charismatic Carribean native came through Boston for the first time in May of last year, I’d never seen someone have such a stranglehold over the crowd as he crooned into the mic and poured straight Hennessy into the front row’s throats and cups. To say his energy was contagious would be a disservice to the word. The plague was contagious — Skerrit Bwoy was something else entirely.
However, this incarnation of the DJ/MC from Major Lazer fame was a different animal than the one who had left us last year. Daggering, which once could be used with his name as part of a word association exercise, was now completely removed from his repertoire.
“I lost the daggering,” he announced to the sold out Throwed crowd at Cambridge’s grungy Middle East Nightclub amidst a smattering of boos, “but I didn’t lose the crazy. The crazy went up.” His audience’s outlook instantly changed into cheers.
But upon seeing his renouncement of the old Skerrit Bwoy back in December, the question remained prominent in the back of my mind: what the hell happened?
I reached out to him the morning before his show and he eagerly accepted my request to chat. I originally asked for just fifteen minutes of his time. When I left the small pizza shop where we conducted the interview across the street from the Middle East, nearly 40 minutes had passed. What I had found in there was an enlightened, exonerated, yet equally exuberant person.
The Good Stuff : 17th Hit (KOAN Sound // Aeroplane // Peacetreaty)

Spring is in the air! And it smells like debauchery. I live New York and though I am exactly 1,287 miles from Miami, the stench of sweaty misbehaved bass heads has wafted up the coast. I am referring to this past weekend’s Ultra Music Festival and the ongoing Winter Music Conference. Not only is Ultra the country’s (if not the worlds) biggest dance festival, but it is also the beginning of festival season. If you’re new to the world of electronic dance music (EDM), festival season is special, very special. It is the part of the year that us concert goers spend whats remaining of our bank accounts, stuff ourselves in small poorly ventilated cars and make pilgrimages across the country in search of the perfect bass. It is kind of like the modern day Lord of The Rings trilogy, with less Frodo and more Avicii. You will be sure to see an elf or two, and may even run into Gandolf wearing a LAX jersey and a fanny pack. This is normal! So remain calm, remember to drink lots of water, and enjoy the scantly clad men and women contorting in ecstasy beside you!
In honor of Ultra:

Zeds Dead & Omar LinX present: Victor
At this point, almost everyone in the world who knows anything about grimy, filthy dubstep must know about the T-dot thundercats better known as Zeds Dead. This hip-hop bred Canadian superduo has been tearing up the scene recently with headlining gigs at shows all over the country and abroad, with appearances at Ultra, Coachella, Camp Bisco, Summer Camp, and more. What most people don’t know is anything about their most regular collaborator, fellow Toronto native Omar LinX.
